The Verona depicted during Romeo and Juliet would have been an independent city-state named The Republic of Verona. The Republic was ruled by the Della Scalla Family, known as the Scaligers.

Verona during Shakespeare’s Time

Verona during Shakespeare’s time would have differed notably from the state of Verona during the time of Romeo and Juliet. Notably, Verona during the plot of Romeo and Juliet would have been an independent city-state ruled by The Della Scalla Family, while during Shakespeare’s Time it would have been part of the famed Venetian Republic. However, during both periods it would have a society closed, but very wealthy area compared to its Northern European neighbors.
